OCC404 Enabling Strategies: Specialist Areas of Practice (16)
Abstract| This subject presents specialised areas of occupational therapy practice. Students will further develop their occupational therapy specific skills and also learn about a variety of specialised practice areas. The subject is taught in a number of modules focusing on different complex practice scenarios and uses a problem based learning structure. The focus of each module will be flexible each year to be responsive to changes within the profession and may include such topics as occupational rehabilitation, mental health, palliative care, aged care, neuro-rehabilitation and/or child and family practice. Inter-professional collaboration and education may be utilised to enhance the learning in some of the modules. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of practice in specific areas that occupational therapists work including occupational rehabilitation and mental health
- be able to demonstrate professional reasoning skills in planning, implementing and evaluating occupational therapy intervention with specific case scenarios
- be able to demonstrate abilities in critically reviewing research on interventions and apply this to complex practice scenarios
- be able to professionally participate in problem based learning meetings including taking minutes, chairing a meeting and reflecting on meeting dynamics

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- A problem based learning approach will be used in this subject.
- Each year the focus will be on five specialist areas of practice in which students will be required to apply their professional reasoning skills.
- The five specialist areas of practice may change each year, and may include practice areas such as: advanced psychosocial practice, aged care, child and family studies and advanced rehabilitation, work rehabilitation and working with healthy communities.
