PHS401 Physiotherapy Clinical Practice Competency (24)

Abstract

Students will undertake sustained periods of physiotherapy clinical practice in a range of clinical settings to develop and consolidate their skills and abilities in professional practice client assessment, clinical reasoning, intervention planning, implementation and evaluation across a range of settings. Learning will be achieved through direct client contact under the supervision of qualified physiotherapists. Students will integrate knowledge from their university studies into clinical practice. Students will be assessed for their achievement of the Australian Standards for physiotherapy using the criteria and forms developed for the National Assessment of Physiotherapy (AAP).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to integrate and apply knowledge gained from academic subjects into a variety of clinical settings.
  • be able to demonstrate achievement of the standards required of an entry level physiotherapist in core areas of physiotherapy practice (Australian Standards for Physiotherapy 2006).
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to effectively integrate skills in assessment, clinical reasoning, planning and implementation of physiotherapy intervention in the management of a client's condition.
  • be able to safely and effectively perform physiotherapy interventions in the clinical setting.
  • be able to articulate and illustrate their achievement of competency and the CSU graduate attributes.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Implementation and achievement of entry level competency as outlined in the Australian standards for physiotherapy (APC 2006)
CSU graduate attributes
Sustained reflective practice and Self-appraisal

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 1.5 day residential school. The residential school provides an opportunity for the assesment criteria to be detailed and the expectations and challenges of placement to be explored and understood.The residential programme includes role plays and break out sessions. 

Work Place Learning

This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 75 days duration. Students undertaking this subject will complete three (3) five week placements equivalent to 75 days. Students will be assessed for safety and competency in a range of physiotherapy skills and settings that reflect integration of knowledge and practice in core areas.
