THL420 Pastoral Counselling: Theory and Professional Issues (8)

Abstract

This subject examines different models of Christian and psychological counselling for pastoral work in the Australian context. Pastoral counselling cases and pastoral situations requiring counselling skills and an understanding of referral in a range of circumstances are considered. Professional issues such as transference, countertransference and supervision are examined in their relationship to pastoral ministry.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to reflect on selected theological writings on pastoral counselling issues
- be able to apply professional standards to pastoral counselling cases and situations
- be able to demonstrate research, writing and communication skills

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- a range of Christian counselling models - a range of psychological counselling models - theological reflection on pastoral counselling and implications for the Australian context - personality development - pastoral and clinical counselling situations: individual and relational - professional issues in pastoral counselling: transference, countertransference, supervision, boundaries and burnout - referral in the context of Pastoral Counselling

Residential School

This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school. The purpose of the residential school is to provide an opportunity for discussion about the meaning of pastoral counselling and the application of pastoral counselling models. Students will present a short introductory pastoral counselling case in a small group.
