APS505 Critical Care Skills (8)

This subject is designed to assist students in the Critical Care stream of the Graduate Diploma/Master of Paramedicine to make a successful transition to the role of an Intensive Care Paramedic, or equivalent. The subject will build on students' previous paramedic qualifications and experience to focus their clinical practice on the advanced critical care skills implemented by advanced paramedics. Students have an opportunity to integrate theory into practice under supervision in controlled environments, including high fidelity clinical simulation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to discuss and demonstrate situational awareness, scene safety, and the efficient management of resources on an emergency scene.
  • Be able to critically evaluate and implement advanced critical care management of trauma and medical presentations in a variety of settings.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with patients, care givers and other health professionals while working as a team.
  • Be able to implement problem solving and clinical decision making skills that allow them to identify, analyse and apply appropriate approaches to new problems.
  • Be able to perform advanced critical care paramedic skills.
  • Be able to critically analyse and apply debriefing and reflection in clinical practice.

  • Advanced monitoring
  • Point of care tests
  • Clinical leadership and reflective practice

Residential School

This subject contains a 5 day Compulsory Residential School.

This subject includes a 5-day residential school where students will become familiar with advanced critical care equipment, skills associated with the critical care of patients and clinical practice guidelines.

The purpose of the residential school is to demonstrate and practice clinical skills in a safe environment for the student, allowing them an opportunity to receive timely feedback and support from the hands on experience.  APS505 is an advanced critical care skills subject that incorporates skills such as finger thoracostomy, ultrasound, airway management and detailed advanced patient assessment procedures.

Travel to and accommodation is required for distance education students attending the compulsory residential school at a CSU campus.
