This subject introduces students to a primary health care model of patient care by paramedics and paramedical services. The concepts of extended care and community paramedicine are explored. Students will examine how extended care paramedicine systems differ from traditional paramedic services. A number of programs from Australia and internationally are examined to enable students' to understand how extended care programs have developed to meet local community needs. The subject also enables student's to develop an understanding of the role of the extended care paramedic in primary health care and how this differs from traditional emergency paramedic care. Students are introduced to case management and referral options. Other topics included are; legal, professional, ethical and legislative requirements.
