CLS103 Paramedic Community Internship (8)

This subject explores at an introductory level the professional self and introduces the contemporary professional model of community paramedic in a health continuum. This subject will focus on concepts that examine the professional responsibilities of paramedics in multifaceted roles within Australia: therapeutic communication, empathy, attitude, confidentiality, and patient safety.  Such competencies will be learned in non-traditional community focused environments .  This subject requires 90 placement hours in various community venues.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • to be able to describe the role of community-based emergency health in a range of paramedic environments.
  • to be able to work in a supervised clinical setting and articulate their role and tasks
  • to be able to communicate effectively in order to promote the health literacy of patients/community members/colleagues
  • to be able to maintain an effective audit trail of their own paramedic practice
  • to be able to continually reflect on and improve their practice and share this with others where appropriate to assist learning for both themselves and others

  • Community placement
  • Confidentiality and consent

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 10 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

The student will be required to attend 90 hours of placement during the semester.

Special Resources

Students will need to undertake a community based clinical placement of 90 hours including 10-12 hours observation with Non Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS). Travel, accommodation and any other costs involved with this placement will be borne by the student. Students will also be responsible for obtaining the correct uniform and completing required immunisation and first aid status prior to attending the placement.
