COM238 Professional Practice Contexts (8)

This subject equips students with the skills and knowledge to become public relations professionals within commercial government and non-profit sectors of professional practice. Professional practice skills and the theoretical approaches studied in previous subjects are applied in an examination of the specialist contexts in which public relations is practised. Students will develop an understanding of how to apply their developing knowledge in a range of practice contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to define communication problems and pose solutions considering ethical, intercultural and global issues in doing so;
  • be able to apply the professional practice skills required to be a competent emerging professional in the communication industry;
  • be able to demonstrate interpersonal skills necessary to become a proficient communicator in the workplace; and
  • be able to demonstrate the criticality of research in practice contexts.

  • Factors informing decision making in communication contexts
  • Ethical, intercultural and global elements of contemporary practice
  • Sectors of contemporary practice: commercial, government and non-profit
  • Relevant theories informing practice
  • Stakeholders, skills and issues within contemporary practice
  • Skills and knowledge expected of emerging professionals
  • Analysing communication problems
