EEB415 Dissertation Proposal and Literature Review (8)

In this subject students articulate a researchable question and design an empirical research study to investigate it. Students write a research proposal for the dissertation, write an accompanying application for ethics in human research approval, and undertake a survey of the relevent and related research literature.

Entry into the Bachelor of Education (Primary)(Honours), Graduate Certificate in Educational Research or as determined by the Course Coordinator.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • conceptualise, write and defend a dissertation proposal in both oral and written form appropriate for an honours level;
  • plan and write a literature review for an honours dissertation;
  • develop an understanding of the function and types of literature reviews;
  • demonstrate skills as a critical consumer of educational research and syntheise this material;
  • clearly articulate, in both the proposal and ethics application, the questions that give rise to the study and the issues that arise from its design and conduct.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Choosing a research area.
  • Specifying researchable focus questions/problems.
  • Choosing appropriate research design and methodology, data collection methods and data analysis methods.
  • Understanding and applying ethical guidelines.
  • The purposes and types of literature reviews.
  • Conducting a search of the literature.
  • Synthesising the literature.
  • Critiquing the literature.
