In this subject, students will explore observation, documentation and assessment practices in prior to school and primary school settings and critically discuss the purposes, method, strengths and challenges of pedagogical documentation in prior-to-school settings. They will observe a young child, documenting and interpreting learning using methods of pedagogical documentation in a digital portfolio. Students will critically analyse the debates and issues around standardised testing and grading systems commonly used in primary school settings in Australia. Students will develop a critical awareness of the usefulness of different approaches for recording children's learning for planning purposes, the ethical implications of these approaches, and how these approaches impact various stakeholders.
