This subject introduces the major language and language development theories informing TESOL practices, approaches, and methods. This subject considers the importance of context for language development. It also explores recent developments in language learning theory that influence TESOL practice including power relations, identity, digitisation, and globalisation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe language as a meaning making system;
  • beable to uncerstand various language learning theories and perspectives, including their historical origins;
  • be able to be aware of various critiques on key language learning theories and perspectives; and,
  • be able to evaluate current language learning issues, phenomena, or practices drawing upon varied language learning theories and perspectives.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Language as a meaning making system
  • First and second language learning theories and perspectives
  • Key concepts in second language learning
  • Current issues in second language learning
