This subject examines key issues involved in contemporary library cataloguing and the application of bibliographic standards to a wide range of resources and user contexts. The standards studied, both practically and theoretically, include Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARC 21, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). Students learn how such standards can be optimally employed in particular, local environments, and to critically evaluate policy and practice with reference to theoretical models such as those originating from the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) report.
