Program management encompasses the coordinated management of multiple projects designed to implement strategies and deliver specific benefits. Portfolio management encompasses those programs and projects needed to achieve strategic business objectives. This subject gives students the skills and understanding required for coordinated management of multiple projects directed toward strategic business and organisational objectives. Students will learn the Project Management Institute (PMIŽ) processes for both program and portfolio management and will be able to apply them in the correct context and situation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and explain program management key terms and concepts;
  • be able to differentiate and compare between program, portfolio and project management concepts and principles;
  • be able to design portfolio and program plans to bring about strategic business change;
  • be able to justify how risk and communication management relates to strategic business goals; and
  • be able to defend the value of program and portfolio management for large organisations.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction and definitions of project, programs and portfolios
  • Integrating projects into programs or portfolios
  • Defining Program Scope and its boundaries
  • Time, cost, quality, and resources for programs
  • Communication between PMO, projects and stakeholders
  • Risk Management between programs and projects
  • Program/Portfolio integration
  • Managing Stakeholders at the program level
  • Governance of Programs and Portfolios
  • Using portfolios for strategic change
