By exploring the history and context of colonisation, students will become familiar with the power relations placed over Indigenous Australians and endorsed through legislation and other practices. This subject will explore how these power relations have impacted on Indigenous Australian women's experience of childbirth and midwifery practice. The social determinants of health will be used to investigate the experiences and outcomes of Indigenous women and their babies. Students will explore the concept of closing the gap in the context of midwifery practice and the role that midwives might play in 'closing the gap' including ways of creating a culturally safe environment. The concepts of cultural safety and cultural competency are explored, students will be expected to critically reflect on their own culture and attitudes and explore the impact these may have when caring for Indigenous women.
