In this subject, students will develop a large collection of foundational knowledge and skills for employment and future studies.The subject design which includes topic activities further aids students' transfer of subject learning to their future workplace and/or studies.

Only available to University Certificate in Workforce Essentials students considering applying for admission into Associate Degree in Policing Practice students.

Assumed Knowledge

This subject is the sole component of an enabling course; therefore, no assumed knowledge is applicable.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Module 1 Technology systems comprises curriculum which is desiged to develop a student's knowledge and skills in the use of : basic computer based technology and internet systems/programs; microsoft office suite; commonly utilised internet programs for searching for information, communicating and banking.
  • Module 2 Write complex documents - the curriculum content of this module is designed to develop a student's knowledge and skills to create basic workplace communication documents e.g. reports, power point presentations, excel spread sheets including APA referencing principles.
  • Module 3 Use targeted communication skills to build relationships comprises curriculum designed to build a student's knowledge and skills in communication competence in the workplace. The module offers opportunity for students to develop self-awareness of their communication competence.
  • Module 4 Address customer needs - the curriculum content within this module focuses on developing a student's knowledge and skills: to apply best practice communication skills to customer interactions; and develop self-awareness of their communication behaviours and the influence on customer interactions.
  • Module 5 Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers - the curriculum content for this module is designed to aid the development of a student's knowledge and skills to communicate successfully in a culturally diverse workplace. The module learning provides opportunity for a student to develop the capacity to reflect on the application of their communication skills in achieving successful communication outcomes.
  • Module 6 Assess and provide services for clients with complex needs is a module which introduces students to the complex needs of members of the public and workplace. There is a specific focus within the module of developing students' knowledge and skills for communicating with people with disabilities and people suffering a mental illness.
  • Module 7 Work within a relevant legal and ethical framework- the curriclum content of this module introduces students to the workplace legal and ethical principles which govern behaviour in the workplace. The module content includes reference to the respective legislation which governs the pratices of both employers and employees in contemporary workplaces.
  • Module 8 Maintain legal and ethical work practices - the content in module 8 scaffolds on the learning content in Module 7 with a focus on the sustainability of best practice legal and ethical workplace practices. The module content introduces students to the appropriate governance bodies which are responsible for oversighting that both individuals and organisations are not in breach of legal and ethical work practices.
  • Module 9 Manage personal stress in the workplace - the content of this module is focused on developing a student's understanding of personal resilience. The module content is designed to develop a student's ability to recognised loss of resilience for themselves and others in the workplace. The strategies for building and maintaining resilience are a focus of the module and avenues for assistance are included in the module resources.
  • Module 10 Show leadership in the workplace - the curriculum content within this module is designed to aid the development of a student's understanding of leadership and the qualities and attributes which define best practice leadership styles. The module focusses on building the student's leadership capacity through self-reflection of their actions in this area.
  • Module 11 Implement and monitor Work Health and Safety policies, procedures and programs to meet legislative requirements - the curriculum content in this module is designed to introduce students to the Work Health and Safety governance policies and protocols in the workplace for the benefit of employees and employers. The module learning focuses on developing the students' knowledge of their responsibilities in this arena and the skill to recognise when breaches of work health and safety policies and procedures occur.
  • Module 12 Undertake project work - the curriculum content within this module is designed to build the student's knowledge and skills to plan, implement, monitor and review a workplace project. The practice-based learning activities within the module offer opportunity for students to apply their understanding of project management to scope, plan, resource, budget, monitor and review a project. A key learning outcome of this module is to develop time management skills.
  • Module 13 Safe car driving behaviour - the learning design of this module does not necessitate students demonstrating car driving skills.The module design is focused on building the knowledge of students to drive safely and recognise poor driving behaviour. A core element of the learning within the module is centered on the applicable legislative regulations for safe car driving.

Residential School

This subject contains a 10 day Compulsory Residential School.

Compulsory residential schools comprising:

2 x 4 days; and

1 x 2 days ( Day 1 is optional attendance, Day 2 is mandatory and comprises  the conduct of Assessment 4 Final Exam)

are scheduled throughout the course. As per Section 5, the purpose of the combination of online and face to face ( compulsory residential schools) provides opportunity to support students' confidence and competence to transition to online learning. The course is a mandatory requirement for entry into the study of the Associate Degree in Policing Practice which requires online learning competence.
