In this workplace learning subject, students will complete a range of workplace learning experiences on campus, in the community and in external workplace learning contexts. This subject focuses on working with adult populations and supporting students to integrate and apply their learning to specific populations and contexts. Students will work directly with clients across the lifespan and across a range of speech pathology practice areas.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to administer formal and informal assessment of communication and swallowing for adult and paediatric populations, in familiar situations according to guidelines provided
  • be able to integrate and interpret assessment and/or intervention data to establish plans for further assessment or intervention
  • be able to implement a range of effective therapeutic skills, in familiar situations with a low degree of supervision
  • be able to integrate knowledge, skills and attributes with the support of a clinical educator, to plan and provide speech pathology assessment and intervention appropriate for a specific workplace or population
  • be able to present written and verbal information in a clear, concise, meaningful and logical manner to specific audiences, including those with language difficulties
  • be able to reflect on development of competency and identify specific goals and strategies for ongoing learning

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Contexts of adult speech pathology practice: public health care system (acute, rehab, outpatient); Private/NDIS
  • Client centred care: working with adults and their significant others
  • Professional Communication: communicating with people with communication difficulties, communicating with professional teams, communicating with non-specialist audiences, written and oral communication
  • Service delivery and 'dosage': intensive intervention, group based vs individual intervention, application of ethical reasoning to service delivery
  • Self-care: managing your own workload and grief and emotional responses
  • Assessment of workplace learning: COMPASSŪ
  • Workplace learning

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 30 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

The workplace learning in this subject focuses on developing students competency in working with adult and paediatric populations through the integration of their knowledge, skills and attributes. Students complete on campus experiences that enable control of client complexity and environmental factors, ensuring appropriate experiences for the students levels of development. In addition, they complete their first external workplace learning block placement (3 weeks). Successful completion of this subject is a prerequisite for the final year workplace learning subjects.

Special Resources

Students may incur expenses associated with workplace learning experiences, including costs of travel, accommodation, uniform and resource development. Students must also have access to a digital voice recorder for all clinical sessions.
