SPH534 Cultural Competency and Community Development as Speech Pathology Practice (8)

In this subject, students engage with the history and current realities of Australias Indigenous people and critically reflect on the influence this has on the accessibility and appropriateness of speech pathology services. Students further develop their reflective practice skills by exploring their own values and beliefs, and critiquing speech pathology practices when working with linguistically and culturally diverse populations. This subject has a specific focus on Indigenous Australian people, languages and culture. The role of language and cultural maintenance in health and wellbeing is explored. Students develop their knowledge of Indigenous Australian languages and their skills in linguistic analysis, to facilitate their provision of culturally responsive speech pathology services.  This subject is taught collaboratively by the School of Indigenous Australian Studies and the School of Community Health.
