ASH401 Honours Theory and Methods (16)

This subject focuses on developing students' understanding of research methodologies and methods integral to the completion of a project/dissertation in Arts and Social Sciences. Students will examine a range of methodologies and methods applied to arts and social sciences research including qualitative, quantitative and/or mixed methods data collection and analysis. The assessment requirements are customised to, and for, the discipline and research interests of the student.

This subject is only available to students who have met the admissions requirements for entry into the Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences (Honours) course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to evaluate the strengths and limitations of qualitative, quantitative and/or mixed methods research;
  • be able to evaluate the formulation of research questions for methodological planning;
  • be able to analyse the suitability of research designs, data collection and data analysis approaches used by researchers;
  • be able to demonstrate data analysis skills relevant to their planned Honours research; and
  • be able to appraise the validity of conclusions in published research articles.

  • Theoretical frameworks
  • Indigenous research methods
  • Creative methods
  • Case study creation and analysis
  • Analytical procedures for evaluating qualitative research data
  • Using statistical software in a variety of multivariate applications
