EML452 LOTE Curriculum Studies 2 (8)

This subject expands upon the fundamental theories and pedagogy of teaching languages other than English (LOTE) developed in EML451, with a particular focus on teaching Stage 6 senior students. It is concerned with the development of the LOTE program to meet syllabus demands in the context of broader educational, community and social issues. It focuses on developing greater cross-cultural awareness and intercultural competence through consideration of key concepts in intercultural communication and key issues in languages pedagogy through a 'language as culture' perspective.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of an Intercultural approach to language teaching and learning that reflects the principles of multicultural Australia through developing a position statement and choice of resources;
  • be able to explain how LOTE curriculum content is organised, specifically for Stage 6 students;
  • be able to explain how contemporary language and cultural issues (or intercultural issues) are reflected in local policy contexts;
  • be able to plan Stage 6 language lessons that include quality teaching, learning and assessment strategies, including ICT strategies, that provide for differentiation of learning strategies for diverse learners; and
  • be able to reflect on your role as a language teacher and the value of languages in the broader school curriculum.

  • Language teaching and learner diversity
  • Technologies in teaching languages
  • Evaluating language programs
