ERP502 Master of Education Project (16)

This subject provides students with an opportunity to explore in some depth an area of interest in education, educational leadership or international education. The supervised research project affords students the opportunity to apply appropriate methods for investigation of an educational issue, demonstrate an understanding of the processes of educational inquiry and submit a report of approximately 15,000 words. The independent and self-directed inquiry processes involved in the subject allows students to consider how research can inform and improve educational practices.

Assumed Knowledge

This subject expects students to build on the other subjects in their degrees. In particular, it assumes that students have developed the knowledge, skills and values espoused in EER500 and specific research methodology skills including writing a literature review, quantitative and/or qualitative research methods. It is advantageous to students to have undertaken other postgraduate subjects with content knowledge in their area of research.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to design and complete an educational research project;
  • be able to apply knowledge of ethical requirements pertaining to research in educational contexts;
  • be able to apply research methodology to investigate an educational issue; and
  • be able to prepare a thesis-like report of approximately 15,000 words.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Identifying a research issue for investigation and a preferred method of researching
  • Reviewing the evaluation process: observation, measurement, assessment, decision-making, educational culture, and ethics
  • Reviewing different research designs: action research and the role of the practitioner, case study, survey, the experimental style, ethnography and the ethnographic style of research, the grounded theory approach, narrative inquiry and stories, focus groups
  • Critically reviewing the relevant literature
  • Preparing a plan for investigating the identified issue and gaining ethical clearance for the project as required
  • Gathering data
  • Analysing data
  • Writing a thesis-like report of approximately 15,000 words
