LES202 Contemporary Issues in Community Development (8)

This subject explores the theories and practices of community development, community building and inclusion, as they relate to health and leisure programs and the human services field. Students investigate the sociopolitical context of community, including equity issues that relate to diverse population groups. They consider theories of inclusive citizenship and how these may inform community practice. Strategies for promoting social change through community programs and projects are also examined.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss and analyse health and wellbeing outcomes from different social, economic, cultural and political perspectives;
  • be able to apply critical political, social and economic insights on health and health provision to health outcomes for people at a local level;
  • be able to apply the concepts of community, power and inequity in relation to health, leisure and human services practices, contexts and projects;
  • be able to explain the concept of inclusive citizenship and critically reflect on how this may be applied in health, leisure and human service contexts; and
  • be able to apply and critically evaluate a variety of the key principles and strategies of community development to health.

  • Understanding and building communities in a health, leisure and wellbeing context
  • Sociopolitical issues in relation to health, leisure and wellbeing
  • Creating equitable and inclusive communities
  • Community development approaches
  • Creating opportunities for inclusive programs
