HLT200 Introduction to Health Informatics (8)

Abstract

This subject introduces students to the uses of information technology (IT) in health care. The application of IT to clinical record keeping, data retrieval, research, communication, decision support, and financial management will be examined. This subject facilitates the development of basic skills necessary for the use of information technology in the health care setting through various teaching-learning activities including electronic mailing lists (listservers), discussion forums and the World Wide Web.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively using a variety of electronic media;
Identify, extract, and critique health care information from a variety of electronic resources;
Participate in on-line discussions about the use of information technology in health care;
Articulate a rationale for the effective application of information technology in health care practice;
Describe current and future uses of information technology within health care - eg., clinical information systems, decision support systems, management information systems, electronic medical records, telemedicine, etc;
Discuss current issues associated with the use of information technology in health care - eg. costs/benefits, legal and ethical, practicalities, workforce preparation/motivation, etc.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
Health informatics infrastructure (Module 1) computer hardware; computer software; files, databases and information; computer networks; workplace issues. Telesupport (Module 2) communication; obtaining and disseminating information; research; learning and teaching; administration and management. Telehealth (Module 3) health promotion; diagnosis and treatment; patient support services. Health care information systems (Module 4) intranets; electronic health records; decision support; health care management; health information science.
