Academic Integrity Officer

Profile

Michelle is an Academic Integrity Officer in the Academic Integrity Unit, Office of Academic Quality, Standards and Integrity, at Charles Sturt University. Michelle works to uphold academic integrity by investigating academic misconduct, supporting staff and students in understanding academic integrity principles, and contributing to fair and transparent decision-making processes.

Michelle has an academic background in Public Health, with many years of experience in both research and teaching at Queensland University of Technology. She has held specialist roles in academic integrity at both Queensland University of Technology and the University of Sydney, where she has led complex investigations into contract cheating, examination misconduct including online proctored exams, and the unauthorised use of generative AI. Michelle has also contributed to the development of academic integrity policies and procedures and has designed and delivered staff training to enhance detection and referral practices. Michelle has worked in collaboration with Turnitin in the early development of their detection software and has presented at Turnitin conferences to university staff from across the Asia Pacific region. As an educator, Michelle is known for creating inclusive, supportive learning environments where students feel confident engaging with complex concepts and developing their own critical perspectives. Her work in academic integrity is grounded in this same philosophy. She sees academic integrity not as a compliance issue, but as a foundation for building students' authentic academic skills and confidence in their abilities.
