EEL424 Diffusion of Innovations (4)


From the broad range of change and technology adoption theories, the diffusion of innovations theory is one of the most appropriate for
examining the emergence, adoption and spread of new or cutting edge technology in a range of environments. A synthesis of innovation research involves examining the relationship between the development of innovative capabilities (ie, technology sourcing, the potential to start or grow an enterprise, the amount of risk and innovation) and the realisation of technology strategy pointing to the assimilation and transference of technology among and between individual and institutional stakeholders.  In this subject, students will engage in highly personalized learning through the investigation, development and implementation of an innovative technology or an innovative learning practice in their workplace or other associated environment to examine the relationship between creativity, innovation and technology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the key elements in the diffusion of innovations (innovation, communication channels, time, and social system;
  • be able to identify and discuss emerging innovations within the technological landscape;
  • be able to evaluate and apply models for selecting and implementing new technologies (e.g., ACTIONS, SECTIONS);
  • be able to develop an innovation and technology strategy that aligns with a specific environmental context (e.g., organizational goals, strategies, needs, culture, resources); and
  • be able to examine the role of risk in implementing innovative technologies and learning practices and effectively manage that risk in the organization.


The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Elements of diffusion: Innovation, communication channels, time, social system
  • Emerging innovations: Survey of the educational technology landscape
  • Models for technology analysis and selection: ACTIONS, SECTIONS, CASCOIME
  • Innovation, technological strategy, and risk management
  • Case study analysis of an implementation of an innovative technology or learning practice
  • Business plan/proposal for selecting and implementing a new innovation (technology and/or learning practice) within a specific organizational context
