Normal Course Duration

Course duration referenced below is the effective time taken to complete a course when studied full time (full time equivalent duration). At Charles Sturt the standard calendar refers to 32 points a session over a 2 session calendar year. The Actual Duration is the time taken to complete the course following the prescribed enrolment pattern. A course's actual duration can be affected by the session calendar (number of sessions undertaken per year) and/or mode (full time, part time or mixed) and credit packages which may have been granted unpon admission. Therefore, depending on the prescribed enrolment pattern, mode, calendar utilised and credit awarded a course may take less time or more time to complete than the duration noted as full time equivalent years. Students are advised to consult the Enrolment Pattern to determine the actual duration of study.

Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)

Full-time: 3.0 years (or part-time equivalent)

Admission Criteria

CSU Admission Policy

Applicants for the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) must meet the following admission requirements: A completed Bachelor's degree (or AQF equivalent) and successful completion of acceptable undergraduate and/or post graduate study that includes the equivalent of three-quarters of a year (0.75 Equivalent Full Time Study Load - EFTSL) of discipline study, usually comprising sequential study taken over three years.  In most programs, this equates to six units, with no more than two units at first year level and no fewer units than two units at third year level.

Charles Sturt takes a holistic approach to understand each applicant's potential for academic success. Each student is assessed on a range of factors including academic readiness, previous study, work and life experience, motivation to succeed, and an awareness of the demands of tertiary study.

Upon admission students who meet the entry requirements in full are awarded 64 points of entry-level credit in recognition of prior completed relevant undergraduate and/or postgraduate study.

The credit packages which are awarded upon entry to the course are based on the extent to which the applicant's previous academic undergraduate and/or postgraduate study fits with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements for secondary teaching areas. Students who do not meet the minimum NESA requirements will receive proportionally less credit - based on the number of additional subjects required to meet accreditation.
This credit is represented on academic transcripts as:

  • EDU42C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 64 subject points (indicating no additional study is required to support their teaching area)

If students require additional discipline subjects (maximum of two) to meet NESA accreditation requirements then the following credit package will apply:

  • EDU40C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 56 credit points (indicating 1 further discipline content subject is required to support teaching area)
  • EDU39C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 48 subject points(indicating 2 further discipline content subjects are required to support teaching area)

Students may be granted up to a maximum of eight subjects of credit from the set of sixteen core Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) subjects based upon additional graduate entry studies.

English Language Proficiency Entry Requirements for Teacher Education Preparation Programs
All applicants who do not meet the Standard CSU English Language Proficiency Requirements must demonstrate proficiency by completing an Academic IELTS (or equivalent) with an overall score of 7.5 (with no score below 7 in reading and writing, and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening) - see CSU Concordance Tables for accepted equivalent measures.

NOTE: Please refer to relevant National or State employing bodies for their English language proficiency requirements when seeking employment.

CSU Credit Policy

Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) Graduate Entry

Upon admission students are awarded 64 points of entry level credit in recognition of prior completed relevant undergraduate bachelor degree.

  • EDU39C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 48 subject points (indicating 2 further discipline content subjects are required to support teaching area)

Students may be granted up to a maximum of eight  subjects credit from the set of sixteen core Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) subjects based upon additional graduate entry studies.

Any student who completed professional experience as part of another incomplete degree may apply to have that practicum recognised as equivalent in the same manner that they would apply for credit for other subjects.

Graduation Requirement

To graduate students must satisfactorily complete 192 points.

Course Structure

The course consists of 16 education subjects comprising 12 core subjects plus 4 restricted electives (at least two curriculum method subjects per teaching area and three Curriculum Method subjects for students with two HASS/HSIE teaching areas e.g. Modern History and Business Studies or Science teaching areas e.g. Biology and Chemistry) and either one or two further restricted electives, respectively. Students entering the course with less than the maximum credit package must complete an additional teaching discipline subject depending on their background, and/or a third curriculum method subject for those with two HASS/HSIE teaching areas or two Science teaching areas and a third additional teaching area in another discipline area (e.g. English or Mathematics), or 2 teaching discipline subjects depending on their background, as explained below.

Upon entry to the course, a standard credit package will be given to each student based on how well the student's undergraduate degree meets the requirements for their intended teaching area, in terms of the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) guidelines.

  • Students whose background fully meets the requirements are given the maximum standard credit package of 64 points (equivalent to 8 subjects), and simply complete the 16 education subjects (128 points).
  • Students who do not meet the NESA content/discipline requirements receive proportionally less credit (either 56 points or 48 points) based on the number of additional discipline content or curriculum method subjects required.
    • Students with the 56-point entry level credit package are required to complete the 16 education subjects (128 points) plus one 8-point discipline content or curriculum method subject to satisfy requirements for their teaching area.
    • Students with the 48-point entry level credit package are required to complete the 16 education subjects (128 points) plus two 8-point discipline content or curriculum method subjects to satisfy requirements for their teaching area.

All subjects have a value of 8 points with the exception of two subjects, one of which has a zero point value and another with a 16 point value.
