For teaching

Can lecturers use copyright works for teaching?

As a member of Universities Australia, Charles Sturt participates in the Statutory Education Licence scheme administered by the Copyright Agency and Screenrights.

The scheme allows teaching staff to use some third party copyright material in lectures and coursework. There are limits and conditions on the amount of material that can be copied.

  • Copies of text and images used under the statutory licence must only be stored in Leganto or DOMS copyright collection.
  • Do not upload material copied under the statutory licence to the LMS or on public facing websites, discussion boards or social media.

Refer to the Copyright Support site in Brightspace for details on limits, conditions and storage by resource type.

Key points for using third party content in teaching resources

Apply the following principles to the use of third party copyright content at Charles Sturt.

  • Link to copyright content where possible rather than copying. Using inline or embedded links is fine where allowed by the source.
  • Always include attributions indicating the author, source, and licence.
  • Restrict content to enrolled students only and remove it when use is complete.
  • Limit copying to essential content only.
  • Only use approved systems for making teaching content available.
  • Make use of open education resources and content available under Creative Commons or other open licenses as much as possible.
  • Use only legitimate material. Do not use material restricted behind a paywall or commercial license if not authorised. Do not use material that might be online without the copyright owners permission.

Publishing teaching materials

The University owns copyright of teaching materials created by staff at Charles Sturt, under the Charles Sturt Intellectual Property Policy. Any publication or sharing outside the university network requires prior authorisation.

The library supports the publication of teaching materials as open education resources (OER). These materials are released with © Charles Sturt University and licensed under a Creative Commons (CC) licence. CC licences promote sharing and reuse and are authorised for use in teaching materials by the university librarian (Standing Authorisations Register A42).
