Since the establishment of the IFRG in 2006, we have helped deliver successful fish passage outcomes in Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Germany, and Australia.
The Inland Fisheries Research Group (IFRG) brings together a diverse, multi-institutional team of research scientists, technicians, engineers and resource managers who share a common goal - to undertake innovative, interdisciplinary research that advances the protection and sustainability of inland fisheries.
Charles Sturt University provides infrastructure and administrative support to the IFRG.
Professor Lee Baumgartner started the IFRG when he first began leading a multi-institutional fish passage research project in Lao PDR in 2006.
At the time, numerous scientists, engineers, and resource managers in Lao PDR and Australia were tackling inland fisheries challenges, but their efforts remained largely isolated, with little to no collaboration among them.
Recognizing the need for a more unified approach, Professor Baumgartner set out to bridge these gaps. He established the IFRG on a foundation of direct partnerships with key experts and their host institutions, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to advance fisheries research and management.
Today, the IFRG brings together fisheries specialists from universities, engineering firms, and government agencies across the globe. Through this collective expertise, the group continues to deliver impactful research and sustainable solutions for inland aquatic ecosystems.
Charles Sturt University aligns our research, policies, procedures, and other work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These are the most relevant SDGs for this initiative.
