Competency based standards

The Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS) sets out specified Competency Standards for Medical Scientists working in a diagnostic pathology setting in Australia (AIMS).

These standards have been established to represent the typical contribution expected from an individual with a degree in a relevant scientific or applied science field from an Australian (or equivalent) university, along with two years of relevant professional experience in an accredited laboratory.

The term Competency has been defined as "the ability to perform the activities within an occupation or function to the standard expected in employment" (National Competency Standards Policy and Guidelines, National Training Board 1991). It encompasses attributes such as knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes required for professional practice.
