Professional Experience Scholarships

These scholarships have been developed to assist Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Bachelor of Veterinary Science students financially whilst on placements. The scholarships open approximately in February and close in March each year.

The form is currently closed.

The scholarships are provided by:

Drs Mary and Peter Atkinson ($1,500)

Mary & Peter Atkinson were in practice in Moruya for over 30 years and have now retired from their business. They met at vet school and Mary ran the small animal and surgical side, with Peter specialising in the equine and bovine areas. The practice is now owned by two of Charles Sturt's graduates. The recipient for this scholarship shows outstanding academic achievement and a commitment to the veterinary profession.

Piper Street Veterinary Clinic – Dr Rhys Duncan (2 x $1,000)

Rhys Duncan is a graduate from Charles Sturt University who is a partner at the Tamworth clinic. The mixed practice currently employs several Charles Sturt graduate veterinarians. The recipients for this scholarship have a commitment to rural veterinary practice and aspire to a future serving the farming community.

Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Inc. ($1,500)

Rotary is a respected organisation known for its initiative in supporting communities worldwide. The recipient of this Scholarship will be invited to address a dinner meeting of the Rotary Club

Wagga Wagga Veterinary Hospital – ($1,000)

The Wagga Wagga Veterinary Hospital is co-located with the Kay Hull Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urana Street. This scholarship is to help students travel and undertake placement and offset the burden of lost income when in their final year.

Kym & Lesley Abbott Travel (1 x $1200)

Bill and Bonnie Holmesby, Lesley Abbott's parents, were great supporters of the course from the beginning and commenced this scholarship to support students who plan to practice overseas. Since their passing, Kym and Lesley have continued the support. Kym Abbott was the inaugural Head of School for the School of Animal and Veterinary Science.

Rotary Club of Wagga Wagga Inc. 4 1 $1,500 Based on sound academic record in years 1-3, activity in student and/or community affairs, and commitment to rural veterinary practice.  The successful recipient is required to make a presentation to a Rotary Club meeting.
Piper Street Veterinary Clinic 4 2 $1,000 Based on a commitment to rural Australia. It is desirable that the successful applicants will complete a clinical extramural studies (CEMS) placement at Piper Street Veterinary Clinic.
Kym and Lesley Abbott Travel Scholarship 5 1 $1,200 To support a student in their 5th year to complete a placement  in another country (preferably farther afield than New Zealand).  The aim of the scholarship is to assist a student gain an international experience and to be able to benefit from seeing practice, and living for a few weeks, in another country.
Wagga Wagga Veterinary Hospital 5 1 $1,000 Based on demonstration of students having maintained paid employment throughout their studies, and will therefore forego employment to undertake placement in final year.
