The Bachelor of Veterinary Technology develops graduates with transferable skills, valued across a range of settings, including veterinary clinics and surgeries, diagnostic labs, zoos, horse studs, cattle feedlots or the poultry industry, nationally and internationally. The Bachelor of Veterinary Technology is unique in Australia, combining both TAFE and university study, responding to predicted growth trends in the veterinary services industry. Graduates are equipped to work in quality companion animal care, to help meet veterinary requirements in animal production systems or to become part of significant advances in reproductive technologies.

Normal course duration

Bachelor of Veterinary Technology

Full-time 3 years (6.0 sessions)

Part-time 6.0 years (12.0 sessions)

Normal course duration is the effective period of time taken to complete a course when studied Full-time (Full-time Equivalent: FTE). Students are advised to consult the Enrolment Pattern for the actual length of study. Not all courses are offered in Full-time mode.

Admission criteria

CSU Admission Policy

Rank 1

Applicants with any of the following:

  • Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or Diploma in Veterinary Nursing
  • ATAR of 70 or greater (or equivalent), with passes in mathematics  AND either  chemistry  or biology; or
  • Applicants eligible for rank 2 who are granted special consideration by the Admissions Sub Committee of Academic Senate on the grounds of educational disadvantage.

Applicants with one or more of the following:

  • ATAR equal to or greater than the minimum, as approved by Academic Senate, or equivalent;
  • A completed Certificate IV, Associate Diploma, Associate degree, Diploma or equivalent in a course provided by TAFE or another accredited vocational education provider;
  • Successful completion of at least two University subjects, either as an associate student of CSU or subjects offered by another university;
  • Applicants eligible for rank 3 who are granted special consideration by the Admissions Sub-committee of the Academic Senate on the grounds of educational disadvantage.

Applicants with one or more of the following:

  • A minimum of three years relevant work experience AND documentary evidence of motivation to undertake university study in Veterinary Technology. Such evidence must include a statement by the applicant addressing the issue of work experience, the reason(s) for their interest in the course and what they have done (or will do) to prepare academically  for the course. A statement of support (recommendation) from an employer or a professional person is desirable;
  • Aboriginal applicants who have completed the ADEPT program;
  • Applicants recommended by the Admissions Sub-committee of the Academic Senate (significant disadvantage);
  • Applicants excluded from a course at CSU or another university who have demonstrated that they have taken satisfactory measures to address the factors that contributed to their exclusion.
