Western Region Academy of Sport [WRAS]

The Western Region Academy of Sport (WRAS) is a major regional sporting institution supporting talented athletes across the NSW Central West. Established in 1991 and headquartered on the Charles Sturt University Bathurst campus, WRAS provides pathways for pre‑elite junior athletes, coaches, and officials to develop the skills, training, and mentoring needed to progress toward higher‑level sporting opportunities.  Through specialised coaching, sports science testing, movement screening, strength and conditioning programs, and inter‑academy development camps, WRAS helps emerging athletes access high‑quality resources typically available in metropolitan systems.

From a community perspective, the partnership between WRAS and Charles Sturt University is long‑standing, deeply integrated, and highly impactful. CSU has supported WRAS since the academy moved onto the University’s Bathurst campus in 1991, providing facilities, expertise, and governance support.  A CSU representative has served on the WRAS Board since 1995—most recently Dr Melissa Skein from the School of Allied Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences—ensuring consistent collaboration between the academy and academic staff.  This relationship also allows CSU academics to contribute expertise in exercise science, psychology and marketing, supporting WRAS athletes while enriching CSU’s own teaching and learning environment.

The partnership thrives through joint initiatives such as the WRAS Strength and Conditioning Internship Program, a nationally recognised scheme where CSU Exercise Science students undertake 12‑month placements to design, deliver and monitor athlete development programs. This program has even earned international recognition, with CSU and WRAS jointly receiving the prestigious Strength of America Award for excellence in youth strength and conditioning. The collaboration provides emerging sports scientists with real‑world industry experience while giving regional athletes access to high‑quality, evidence‑based training.

WRAS also regularly hosts key events—such as athlete orientations and annual program launches—on the CSU Bathurst campus, further embedding the academy within the University community. During these events, CSU Strength and Conditioning interns actively support athlete testing, education and mentoring, strengthening the practical links between academic training and community sport development.

Together, WRAS and Charles Sturt University form a powerful community partnership that elevates regional athletes, enriches student learning, and strengthens the sporting identity of the Central West. Their collaboration ensures young athletes in regional NSW gain access to opportunities, expertise and facilities that rival metropolitan pathways, while simultaneously reinforcing CSU’s commitment to serving and uplifting its communities.
