A number of Regional and rural affected areas across New South Wales are currently under lockdown and adhering to stay-at-home orders. In response to this, Charles Sturt University will continue to deliver most on-campus classes online until further notice.
Some exceptions will be made for on-campus classes with components that cannot be delivered online and are essential for student progress, such as clinics and simulations.
If you need to return to campus for classes, you must:
- Provide a negative COVID-19 test prior to attending practical classes
- Submit a Protecht report both when you take a test, and when you receive your result.
- Fill in a health declaration when you return to campus stating any recent travel.
Please refer to your subjects Interact2 subject site and the email sent on Thursday 2 September to find out if you need to return to campus for class.
Students in LGAs of concern
Students in Sydney-based Local Government Areas of concern are not permitted to attend any of our campuses. As Australia’s most experienced online university, rest assured, you do not need to be on our campuses to progress your education. Here’s what you need to do:
- Missing classes? Please contact your subject coordinator, they will work with you to ensure you can complete your course requirements. We will do everything we can to ensure your studies are not impacted.
- Missing WPL? If you are no longer able to complete Workplace Learning, or have concerns in regards to your allocation due to COVID-19, please contact your WPL Coordinator or team. They will work with you to either apply for Special Consideration or reallocate your Workplace Learning.
- Missing your residential school? Please contact your subject coordinator.
In line with government health advice, we strongly encourage all students to get their COVID-19 vaccination as soon as they become eligible. This is particularly important for any student who undertakes Workplace Learning (WPL) in the community as a part of their course requirements.

We're taking all necessary precautions and following our return to campus plan. As part of our return to campus plan, we’re asking everyone to use the Department of Health’s QR code check-in system when entering buildings, and to continue to follow COVID-19 safe practices. If an outbreak occurs, we are prepared to respond and our return to campus plans will change.
No matter what happens, we’ll work with you to ensure you can continue your studies.
What to do when on campus chevron_right
Please continue to follow COVID-19 safe practices when on campus. These include:
- Fill in your health declaration every Monday.
- Check-in using the QR codes provided to every building you enter. This is super important in case there is an outbreak in our regions.
- Wear a face mask when indoors.
- Adhere to the 4 metre square rule.
- Maintain good hygiene, and use the hand sanitising stations.
- Do not attend campus if you are unwell. You must stay at home, get tested, and self isolate until you get a negative test result.
Check in when on campus
You need to check in to every building you enter when visiting our campus.
Each university building has a unique Service NSW QR code displayed on a poster at the entrance.
Use your mobile phone to scan the QR code and follow the prompts to check in using the Service NSW app. You do not need a MyServiceNSW account.
What if I can’t check in using a mobile phone?
If you don’t have a mobile or don’t have the capability to check in on your mobile you have two other options for checking in.
The easiest way is to get a friend to check you in as you enter. A friend can enter your name as a dependent when they check in.
If you sign in a friend, Service NSW asks you to check you have their contact details. You should also show them the privacy notice displayed in the app.
If you are unable to check in using the above method, you need to use a computer to check in.
To check in using a computer, select the location below to open the relevant web form.
- You need to check in to your campus location each day you attend campus.
- You also need to check in each time you visit a Cheers hospitality venue.

Most classes have temporarily moved to online learning. If you are an on-campus student, you won't need to change your enrolment status – you can simply proceed to study online.

Please note you will need to follow NSW Health advice, and you may be required to self-isolate before arriving if you are travelling from another state. - Students who do not comply with University directions may be excluded
- Students and staff advised to wash their hands (soap and water) when entering and exiting facilities
- Non-disposable equipment will be cleaned before and after use with a suitable disinfectant (available in class)
- Physical distancing in teaching areas is preferred, but reliance on university exemption is permissible
- Floors, work areas marked to identify physical distancing
- Learning and research activities redesigned to limit close proximity or crowding
- Face Masks: Only for previously assessed high risk activities involving exposure to respiratory aerosols and hand to face contact
- Complete health declarations for intensives and some teaching activities. Students to present these to subject coordinators
- Minimise personal belongings in class. Only items required for activity e.g. book and pen
- Store personal belongings safely outside facility
Alert Level 2: Some local COVID-19 cases (and/or increasing risk of transmission) chevron_right
Extra actions for this scenario
All of the actions for Alert level 1, plus:
- Prepare yourself for a possible increase in cases in your community
- Develop a social bubble outside uni/work and limit interactions outside your bubble
- Change or avoid non-essential activities where you are exposed to people outside your bubble
- Change or avoid activities shown to have increased risk (indoor activities, singing, planned holidays or travel)
- Change some of your activities to reduce your interactions (such as online shopping or online banking)
- Avoid public transport to and from campus
- Exclude any person who is unwell or has symptoms
- Prepare for exclusive online learning
Alert level 2 campus actions
All of the actions above, plus:
- Attend campus with care
- Student residences remain open but the uni may review acceptance of students from at-risk areas
- Student Central, Learning Commons and Library open for staff and students only, face-to-face services likely to reduce or cease – check website for hours
- First Nations Student Centres remain accessible for study
- Avoid bringing visitors to campus
- In the absence of government advice, only essential travel at 50% of vehicle capacity
- Events minimised to be consistent with internal use of campuses and facilities. Events subject to Event Registration requirements
- Face Masks: In the absence of government advice, only for previously assessed high risk activities involving exposure to respiratory aerosols and hand to face contact and where physical distancing cannot be achieved.
Alert level 2 teaching and research actions
All of the above, plus:
- Classes and research may shift to online where face-to-face is not required
- Alternative learning and data collection may be facilitated for affected students and activities
- Special consideration available for students
- COVID safety plans in place for teaching environments
- Further minimise contact activities during class
- Arrival times will be staggered to avoid gatherings of people waiting to enter rooms
- Break times will be staggered to minimise the number of staff and students using common areas at the same time
- We will supervise hand hygiene using hand sanitiser or soap and water
- We will increase frequency of in-class hand cleaning
- In the absence of government advice; restrict the need for participants to come to campus from COVID-19 areas of concern
- In the absence of government advice; exclude students and visitors who left areas of concern less than 14 days ago and have not completed self isolation
- Face Masks: If you are teaching, you can remove your mask where clear enunciation or visibility of your mouth is essential. Please ensure all students are wearing their masks and maintain physical distancing.
- Maintain contact bubble for practical classes, e.g. students to stay with the same workgroup or partner.
- Avoid circulation of students between bubbles and limit person to person contact
Alert Level 3: Significant local COVID-19 transmission (recognised area of risk) chevron_right

- Stay at home except for essential activities
Alert level 3 campus actions

- Only 'essential' on-campus activities to occur

Alert level 3 teaching and research actions

- Only essential on-campus classes and research to occur if unable to be delayed – Deans to review and approve
- In the absence of Government advice, require a negative test result if returning to campus for any learning or teaching activity
- Comprehensive COVID safety planning required for any on campus teaching. Plans to address all elements of NSW Health COVID Safety Plans

Support for students
We are responding to COVID-19 as the situation evolves. As part of this, we continue to offer a range of support services to students.
SSAF-funded support and projects chevron_right
- The library is currently offering a free textbook delivery and return postage service for students studying online.
- LinkedIn student licences are available, providing unlimited access to over 15,000 courses in 7 languages.
- Student mentoring and leadership opportunities continue to be provided.
- We continue to offer a range of financial support and services online. Students can contact a Student Welfare and Finance Adviser for more information or assistance.
- Our Career Development Officers are working on delivering a range of workshops and self-help resources including mastering the STAR method, managing your digital footprint, preparing a LinkedIn profile and living on a budget. Career Development Officers are also available for one-on-one phone or video consultations to help students with:
- career planning
- resume review
- job applications
- interview preparation
- course indecision.
- Counselling services are available via Skype and phone. Additionally, we’re continuing drug and alcohol prevention initiatives, sexual assault and sexual harassment programs, strategies and support for academic success, and initiatives focused on diversity and inclusion.
- We continue to provide online engagement sessions on topics such as yoga, maintaining motivation, trivia and arts.
- Students who are part of our Elite Athlete Program can access support via our dedicated Elite Athletes and Sport Student Liaison Officer.
- Residential school support – arrival and departure transport services and emergency accommodation options are available.
- Academic writers are available for referencing support through the use of online resources.

The Academic Skills Adviser (Online Study) team is supporting students with online learning throughout COVID-19.
Students can participate in workshops and speak to specialist advisers to get help with online learning, referencing, online exams, and staying connected.

Special consideration chevron_right
All students are eligible to apply for special consideration if they are impacted by COVID-19. Apply for special consideration if you cannot complete your subjects or workplace learning by the end of session, have difficulties with online exams, or are unable to attend residential schools due to border closures or travel restrictions.

Support for international students in New South Wales
The New South Wales Government funded up to 20 weeks of free accommodation for vulnerable international students in NSW during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Additionally, a new 24/7 international student support service, through the NSW Government COVID-19 hotline (13 77 88), offers free advice and information about other measures, including the moratorium on rental evictions and medical, mental health, legal and emergency support.
Support for international students in Victoria
The Victorian Government is providing a range of support to international students, including one-off rent relief grants, help to find work opportunities, a dedicated COVID-19 online support hub, and access to free accommodation and legal services.
Other support for international students
These supports are in addition to both Federal and State Government investments into charities and organisations to provide support to vulnerable members of the community, including international students. International students may also be able to receive assistance in a number of other areas (from landlords, utilities providers and more).

If you are juggling work, study and lockdowns you can access a range of resources from the Careers and Skills Hub. This includes online resources, one-on-one appointments and a range of workshops including, Managing work and COVID lockdown. The Managing work and COVID lockdown workshop provides general tips and resources to help you manage lockdown-related work issues.

Students should continue to follow travel advice issued by government authorities in the first instance. Please note we are unable to support self-isolation requirements in our on campus accommodation.

General travel advice
Please check the latest government advice on state and territory border closures due to COVID-19 as these may affect your ability to attend classes, residential schools, intensive catch-up blocks, workplace learning, or access facilities on campus.
If you are not able to attend your classes, residential school or intensive catch-up teaching block, or if you choose not to attend as a result of government travel restrictions, you should contact your Subject Coordinator or Workplace Learning team. Checking your Interact2 subject site for updates may also be helpful.
If you have an accommodation booking and need to cancel due to a border closure, you will not be charged.

Hotspots, cluster areas and case alerts
If you reside in or have visited COVID-19 hotspots, cluster areas or case alerts identified by public health officials, we ask that you follow NSW Health advice and understand any travel restrictions that may impact you. Do not travel if you have been advised not to by NSW Health (or the relevant authority in your state).

Protecting yourself and others chevron_right
In line with government advice, Charles Sturt is strongly encouraging all students to have their COVID-19 vaccination. This is particularly important for science and health students who go out on placement into the community. While NSW Health has not mandated vaccinations, local health districts are increasingly requiring students to be fully vaccinated before attending their placement. From 1 September 2021, residential aged care facilities will also require students to be vaccinated. Additionally, from 2022, all health students will need to be vaccinated. Those who have not received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccination will not be allocated a placement from 2022.
Process for workplace learning students:
- Visit the COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibility Checker to find a vaccination clinic and book an appointment.
- When booking your appointment, you need to identify as a 'healthcare worker' and provide proof of occupation – you can use your university ID card for this.
- Download a support letter from your workplace learning Interact2 site to bring to your appointment.
- Once you’re vaccinated, upload evidence to InPlace to let us know. For new workplace learning (WPL) students, InPlace is your one-stop-shop for all things WPL. You’ll need to navigate to the My Details page in InPlace, then scroll down to the “COVID Vaccination Dose 1 and 2” fields. You can then add the date of your vaccination and add supporting evidence of your vaccination.
International students aged 16 years and over who are studying in Australia will have access to COVID-19 vaccines when it's their turn, regardless of Medicare or visa status.
Vaccination providers cannot charge students for the COVID-19 vaccine or your appointments to receive the vaccine. If students don’t have a Medicare card, or are not eligible for Medicare they can get a free vaccination at:
- a Commonwealth vaccination clinic
- state or territory vaccination clinic

To ensure the safety of students and staff on campus, we are:
- increasing the frequency of cleaning
- providing cleaning materials in all classrooms and common areas
- providing hand sanitiser
- implementing the use of QR check-in codes
- encouraging the use of face masks, where appropriate.
What is COVID-19? chevron_right
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus.
Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment. Older people, and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illness.
The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19.

If you have been in contact with someone with a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19, please follow public health orders in the first instance and submit details of your situation to Charles Sturt University through our Incident Reporting form as soon as possible.
