Your Online SRC Representatives 2022/2023

Elected in 2020

Bachelor of Arts

I am Chantelle Walsh from Narromine in the Central West. I am 18 years old and a first year studying B/Arts online. Due to the 2019 (and on-going) drought, my family was unable to financially support me if I were to study on campus so I am thankful for the opportunity of online study and community. I was a consistent member of the SRC in high school. Being involved I knew I was making an impact towards my school’s environmental and cultural potential. If I were nominated for Charles Sturt University’s Online SRC, I would actively provide my voice for those that want to be heard. Important issues that I wish to acknowledge include: the connection and transparency of Online and On Campus SRC members, the inclusion of online students with internal students inside and out of university life and the acceptance of all Charles Sturt University students from all walks of life.

Bachelor of Health and Medical Science

Hi guys :) My Name is Kirralee, I live in inner-city Sydney, and I’m currently completing a Bachelor of Health and Medical Science with Charles Uni via correspondence. I’m passionate about health and neurology, and I’m hoping to get into medicine after I finish my degree. I know that online learning can make you feel disconnected from uni and your peers, and it can leave you feeling like you don’t really have input into what goes on at uni. I would love to have that opportunity to be able to represent my online peers, to ensure that we have the best possible university, and online learning experiences.

Bachelor of Social Work

As a current member of the Online SRC I have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with other students, looking for ways that I can provide assistance and support to my peers. With such a diverse range of students studying online, it has been a great experience working with other online students to build skills and knowledge around the university and student life and pass on that knowledge to others to help them succeed.

Bachelor of Philosophy

Hi, my name is Jordan. I live on the Mid-North Coast and I am in the first year of a Doctor of Philosophy. I have been a member of the Bathurst SRC between 2017-2020 along with representing Bathurst on the Student Senate during that time as well. Since 2020, I have been an online student and I have experienced all of the highs and lows being an online student can bring. Throughout the last two years, I have become passionate about connecting with other online students, ensuring that their online experience is a very positive one and making sure that Charles Sturt looks after online students to the same extent as all the other campuses as well. I would love to represent the online student community and to strive to ensure the best online and learning experiences possible for all online students at Charles Sturt.

Master of Cyber Security

The learning journeys of our online cohort differ markedly to on campus learners. Opportunities for informal peer-to-peer networking, engagement with subject mentors, and access to the University’s services are often perceived as more limited for online learners. Likewise, the quality of online learning materials and platforms, along with opportunities for improvement in this space, is significantly more impactful in the online student learning experience. I’m passionate about working to close the gap for online students, advocating for meaningful positive change in our learning journeys, in both the academic and peer-to-peer context. I am seeking to advocate for our online student community, taking your issues onboard and working with faculty and the Student Senate to be a strong voice for better online student experiences. I will also be advocating for student managed digital platforms to enable the informal peer-to-peer experiences that many are missing. Let’s make online learning better together.

COMMUNITY and SUSTAINABILITY! COMMUNITY…. the world we live in for the most part is insular, we go to school, we go to Woolworths, and to work and repeat with many hours occupied by screens in between.  Those who are lucky enough can enjoy the company of close friends and family a couple of days a week, or less as we are often busy. Many online students wish they could live on campus and enjoy all the parts of Uni life but our individual lives prevent this, we are still lucky enough to have the ability to study online but it can be lonely at times and coming to intensive schools can be daunting with lots of new people. I would like to increase social engagement and activities at intensive schools so online students can build a network of friends and peers that can increase the feeling of community and friendship that can carry on throughout their degree. SUSTAINABILITY…  with such beautiful gardens at Charles Sturt University, I constantly look around and smell the roses so to speak. I believe that interest and imagination once ignited can take people a long way therefore, I would love to be involved in projects that inspire and ignite interest so we can “think global act local” supporting our environment around us.  Local is in our homes and at our university. Small changes can really add up! I would be interested to see how sustainable and responsible we can become if we work together and share ideas! Every bit counts.

Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship)

I would like to be part of the SRC because I would like to improve online student experiences by planning fun activities and events. With the lack of a physical campus to build face-to-face connections with peers, online studies can be an alienating experience. This can result in students not reaching their full academic potential due to a lack of study group and mediocre student life. This is why I strongly believe that by supporting online students with activities, events, and clubs, we can ensure all students receive equitable outcomes.

Bachelor of Social Work

Hi there: I am a student with disability, doing distant education from Melbourne studying Bachelors of Social Work online at Charles Sturt University. There is so much I can contribute when comparing Charles Sturt University with Victorian universities and the vast differences that came forth since 2020. Not only pandemic was hard, there is a lot of coursework that is outdated at Charles Sturt University that even some TAFE courses are better in the area of community services. There are huge changes Charles Sturt University needs to make for students with disability from multicultural background. Charles Sturt University does not even have a multicultural calendar? Further, ASSIST portal is not available for students with disability until 2023. I can advocate for many changes at Charles Sturt University that will benefit all students. I have done quite a lot of youth work in my career that could benefit this council. Kind regards!

Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology)

As an online student at Charles Sturt University, I would love to help improve and advance the needs and resources for online students. I love the online study options at Charles Sturt and am an advocate for them, but I am also aware that there are still areas for improvement. I would be more than willing to listen to the recommendations and advice from other students  and would promote each concern. I would love to help provide online students with more opportunities to connect with other students and to engage in university life, such as clubs and events. This is really important to me as I think that online students should have just as many social opportunities as on-campus students. I really hope to represent the online student community!

Students voices being heard and validated,  fairness for all, regard and respect from lecturers towards online students and their personal lives outside of the academic arena in particular to extenuating circumstances ie, parenting commitments and exam deadlines. Cultural value and respect not only first and foremost for the first nations students, staff and alumni but for every culture, in any capacity whom is involved in Charles Sturt Uni, at every campus.
