Academic dress

December graduation ceremonies have been postponed to allow all graduates the best opportunity to be able to travel and attend their ceremony. We hope to host ceremonies in the first half of 2022. We'll contact you via email by the end of January 2022 with an update.

Walk through the process of wearing your academic dress so you're prepared on the day. Staff will be available to help you get dressed, so that your trencher is on the right way!

All gowns will be dry cleaned after each use so you can be assured you are wearing a sanitised garment. To limit contact, staff will act as flight attendants to direct you on how to don your academic gowning.

All trenchers are brand new, you get to keep this.

Gown

You will need to put your gown on first. With the master's gown your arm is exposed from the elbow. With the bachelor gown your arm does not go through the slit in the arm. You may need to ensure the gown has not slipped back due to the gathering on the yoke.

Hood

To put on the hood (your colours) open it out and place over your head. The front part of the hood should show both the red and faculty colour. Adjust the hood on your shoulders to ensure it does not fall off (for slight people you may need the assistance of some pins). Ensure that the colours of your faculty are showing on the shoulders.

Trencher

The trencher is the graduate hat. The small peak goes to the front. The flat top should be horizontal. If it's not horizontal - you have your hat on back to front.

Common questions

  • Do I have to wear academic dress?

Yes - You must be in full academic dress appropriate to the award being conferred in order to participate in the ceremony.

  • What should I wear under the gown?
    • Smart casual: the gowns have an open front so the clothes you wear will still be noticeable. Wear smart casual at a minimum. It's a celebration, so formal is welcome too! The Masters and PhD gowns have an open sleeve so your arm from the elbow down is exposed. The undergraduate gowns cover most of the arm.
    • Dress for the weather: the gowns are quite warm so if you are graduating during warmer weather dress for comfort. No coats will be needed during the ceremony.
    • Comfortable shoes: most graduates will need to negotiate a set of stairs, cross the stage and walk off the other side so wear shoes you are confident in.
    • Plan for a hat: the trenchers (hats) are skull caps so it is not possible to have your hair in a pony tail unless it is at the nape of you neck. Large hair clips can also make it difficult to position you trencher correctly.
  • Which side does the tassel on the hat go?

Traditionally, the tassel is worn on the left hand side until you graduate when it goes moves to the right. At most of the graduation ceremonies where there is a professional photographer they will ask that you wear it to the right so that it does not block your face when stage photos are taken.

  • Is there anything I can wear to indicate I am Indigenous or a Torres Strait Islander?

Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students have approval to wear a sash of the appropriate colours. Maldhan Gilanna has a stock of these sashes and they will be available at our graduation ceremonies. If you would like to wear one, please please let staff in the dressing area know and they will provide one for you. There is no additional charge for the stoles.

  • Can I purchase my gown?

You can purchase your academic dress from our online shop. Please note that this does not change your ticket cost.
