Interactive components (H5P Suite)

H5P is an abbreviation for HTML5 Package, and allows academic and support staff involved in subject and course development to create a range of interactive resources/activities.

Create your interactive resources through WordPress sites for each subject and then embed your H5P content into Interact2 for students to use.

Why use h5P

H5P is a free, open source platform that contains a suite of tools you can use to create interactive learning objects (e.g. to be included within your own subject content). CSU has its own secure platform for creating H5P objects, which is hosted on our own servers.

Introduction to h5p

Benefits for...

  • Provides opportunities for interactive learning experiences.
  • Simple to engage with.
  • Is free and easy to use.
  • Can be used to actively engage students in the subject content.
  • CSU account intellectual property stays within the University.
  • Contains a suite of activity type ‘templates’ that you can customise, then embed into your own content areas (e.g. learning modules, landing pages)
  • User guides (the basics)

Affordances and limitations

H5P activities can be easily embedded in an interact site.

Any staff member can request a site for their subject or project at

Works across most browsers and devices.

H5P has many assessment tools however these can only be used for formative assessment not summative as our current version does not store results.

Some content types are not accessible so additional resources may needs to be provided if these interactives are used.

The H5P site is not to be used as the method of activity delivery.

If you would like to briefly explore H5P without signing up, visit the public website.

If you would like to use H5P in your subject or a project please submit a request at

  • Once granted a h5p.csu account you will be provided with access to a Wordpress site (similar to Thinkspace) that you can then create H5P activities for that particular subject / project.
  • Go to (also accessible via the ‘Existing Users’ link on the main h5p.csu site)
  • Login using the credentials provided in your initial email confirmation (see above)
  • Select ‘My Sites’ (top left) → select the subject

Select the ‘H5P Content’ item from the left-hand menu

  • A list of all existing H5P ‘activities’ for this subject will appear.
  • Select ‘Add new’ or you can edit an existing item if you’ve created previously.
  • Enter a title for activity (this will not be displayed when you embed the activity)  Scroll through the list of content types, you may need to click ‘Get’ to install it → select the content type you wish to create & start populating the activity.
  • Once finished, scroll up and select ‘Create’ from the top right-hand corner. (note: Subsequent work on this item will change this button to ‘Update’).
  • Select your new item from the All H5P Content list - this will display a preview for you to test.
  • When complete → select the ‘Embed’ option underneath and copy the highlighted ‘Iframe’ code provided.
  • Once created, h5p activities can then be embedded in an interact site.

When working in the H5P.CSU back end, be sure to use the ‘Dashboard’ and the appropriate subject folder to create learning objects – The wordpress site itself is not to be used as the method of activity delivery.

Jump back into your subject site in I2 → make sure edit mode is ON If you are creating a new item to house your H5P object:

  • Build object → create item
  • Click the HTML button in the editor to switch to the code view → paste (ctrl + v) your embed code, then submit.
  • Turn off the editor - you will now be able to see & use your H5P object (make sure the object is not hidden if you want students to do the same).

  • If you are wanting to drop the H5P item into existing content:
  • Open the editor for the content item in question.
  • Click in the content where you want the item placed → type in ‘xxxx’ (this will be easy to find once you start using the html code).
  • Select the HTML view button.
  • Hit control + f (this will open the find dialogue box inside the code) → type in ‘xxxx’ → highlight the four x’s (left click and drag) → paste (ctrl + v) the embed code, then submit.
  • Turn off the editor - you will now be able to see & use your H5P object (make sure the object is not hidden if you want students to do the same).

Tip: you might want to play around with the size and alignment of the embedded object on the page to suit your needs, keep in mind that users can always choose to make the embedded H5P objects full screen if they wish, so dragging out the borders of the object in i2 might not always be a great idea.
