This is the engine room of change. It’s magic. For Carly, working in Advancement is about connection - linking people, ideas, resources, and purpose to spark meaningful change. Since joining Charles Sturt University in 2022, she’s been energised by the chance to support teams across campuses who are creating opportunities for students, researchers, and entire regional communities. Her day-to-day might involve digging into data to uncover impact stories, supporting researchers in finding the right funders, or simply catching up with team members to make sure the wheels of generosity and engagement keep turning smoothly. What inspires her most? The people. Whether it’s a student walking into their first scholarship ceremony, a donor who shares a moving story behind their gift, or a colleague going above and beyond - it’s these human moments that keep her grounded and passionate about the work. One such moment sticks with her: a scholarship student, nervous and alone at her first big university event, shared the emotional weight of being the first in her family to attend university. The scholarship had made it all possible. “We all ended up with happy tears,” she remembers, reflecting on just how transformative a single act of generosity can be. If she could launch a new fund, it would support cutting-edge research with a big heart - quite literally. One project close to her heart is exploring biomarkers in young children with congenital heart defects, led by a Charles Sturt researcher using microsampling: a virtually pain-free fingerprick technique that could revolutionise healthcare monitoring for toddlers in rural and regional areas. “The potential to relieve stress and save lives for families living with this condition is immeasurable,” she says. Her ideal morning includes an almond flat white, some early exercise while the house is still quiet, and watering the garden in peace. Her soundtrack of choice? Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles - a perfect reflection of her calm and optimistic spirit. And while she hasn’t revealed all her fun facts just yet, one thing’s clear: she’s drawn to community, purpose, and mission-driven organisations. “If I weren’t in Advancement, I’d still be working with volunteers somewhere, supporting people who want to make a difference.” One of the things she loves most about working in a regional university? The sheer talent that emerges from the regions - and the pride she feels when spotting alumni out in the world. And if you’re visiting the Wagga campus? Don’t miss the Charles Sturt University Winery cellar door. With beautiful views, a rich art collection, and award-winning wines, it’s a must-see. If you’re lucky, Johnny might even give you the inside scoop on the winemaking process. What motivates you? People
