“It’s amazing how much of a difference you can make in the lives of students and the community.” With a background in community connection and a passion for positive change, Craig Trethowen has spent the past three years at Charles Sturt University turning philanthropic conversations into life-changing opportunities. As a Development Officer, he’s often out in the community listening to stories, discovering aspirations, and aligning local support with the university’s mission. “I love hearing the ambitions of regional businesses and individuals,” he shares. “There’s so much drive and pride in the regions, and it’s a privilege to connect that to the work happening at Charles Sturt.” The most rewarding part of the job for Craig is seeing that real impact unfold - when students achieve short-term study goals and then go on to contribute meaningfully to the world around them. One moment that stood out to him was seeing a former scholarship recipient - now a successful healthcare professional - establish their own scholarship to support future students pursuing the same path. “It was the full circle of support in action,” he recalls. “Their belief in the power of education, and their decision to give back, was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.” If he had the chance to create a scholarship of his own, Craig wouldn’t hesitate: a Rural First Nations Medical Scholarship. It’s an idea that aligns closely with the Foundation’s values and his personal commitment to addressing healthcare disparities in regional communities. He starts his day with a long black or pour-over - ideally brewed from a favourite local Albury roaster - and enjoys a quiet moment watching cartoons with his kids. Off the clock, you might catch him rewatching The Labyrinth, the cult classic that never fails to lift his spirits. Or, more impressively, teaching his dog to skateboard (though, he admits, the kickflip still needs work). Regional Pride and Natural Beauty For Craig, the best part of working in a regional university is the tight-knit community - where everyone feels connected, and support is always close by. And if you’re visiting the Albury campus for the first time? He’ll send you straight to the David Mitchell wetlands. “The birdlife is incredible,” he says. “It’s a hidden gem right here on Albury campus.” What motivates you? Making a difference
