About the study

PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication that helps prevent HIV. It’s taken before possible exposure to HIV and is highly effective when used correctly. PrEP has been available in Australia since 2018 through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), making it more affordable.

Why this study matters

Young gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (YGBMSM) are still seeing high rates of HIV. In fact, around two-thirds of new HIV cases in Australia are in GBMSM aged 25 and under.

Even though HIV rates are low in people under 25, they rise sharply once young people hit their 20s. At the same time, not many young people are using PrEP. That tells us there are real barriers—personal, social and structural—that stop young men from accessing PrEP, even though it is readily available.
