Our approach

The PrEP Empowerment Project is a national research study funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). We’re working to:

  • understand what stops young men from accessing PrEP
  • develop a peer navigation program that connects experienced PrEP users with those thinking about starting
  • co-design a mobile app that helps young men connect, learn and make informed choices about PrEP
  • explore how much General Practitioners (GPs) know about PrEP and what helps or hinders them from prescribing it.

How the study works

We’re using a mix of research methods to get a full picture:

  • Global and Australian reviews of PrEP access and use.
  • Real Time Delphi studies (collaborative question and answer sessions) with young men, clinicians and researchers to help design survey tools.
  • Co-design workshops to build a mobile app with input from young PrEP users and non-users.
  • Surveys and interviews with GPs and young men to understand attitudes, knowledge and barriers around PrEP.
