Resource Recovery Facility at Charles Sturt’s Wagga Wagga campus plays an important role in assisting with the diversion of waste away from landfill.
Charles Sturt University has embedded circular economy principles into its operations through its Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency Procedure, which underpins efforts to minimise landfill waste and quantify disposal streams. A key component of this strategy is the requirement for waste management contractors to actively support diversion initiatives, measure the amount of waste sent to landfill and recycled, and provide regular reporting on recovered and landfilled materials.
In 2024, the university achieved a 45% recovery rate for non-construction waste, reflecting strong performance in general operations. Construction and renovation projects are also held to high standards, with contractors mandated to submit waste management plans prior to commencement and report on waste diversion rates throughout the duration of the project.
These projects consistently achieve diversion rates exceeding 75%, demonstrating the university’s commitment to sustainable building practices. Through policy, partnerships, and performance tracking, Charles Sturt continues make -proactive improvements in resource recovery and landfill reduction across its campuses.
