Advancing global research to address poverty

Professor Manohar Pawar at the United Nations.

Global progress on poverty reduction has slowed, with overlapping crises leaving millions without adequate income, social protection or secure work. In response, Professor Manohar Pawar from the School of Social Work and Arts provided academic leadership in curating a special issue of the International Journal of Community and Social Development. The collection brought together analyses from international scholars, non-government organisations, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development and the World Bank to identify systemic gaps in social protection employment, inequality reduction, climate action and global financing.

The completed issue offered an evidence-based foundation to inform deliberations for the Second World Summit for Social Development in 2025. As President of the International Consortium for Social Development, Professor Pawar also attended the United Nations’ 63rd Commission for Social Development. His participation in core sessions and key events helped ensure diverse perspectives informed preparations for the Summit.
