Building agricultural skills to support food security

Dr Jeff McCormick and Dr Wendy De Luca.

Papua New Guinea’s food security depends heavily on agriculture, with a large proportion of the population relying on farming for their livelihood. To strengthen national agricultural capability, Charles Sturt University led the National Agriculture Training Package for Papua New Guinea.

Working in partnership with the Government of Papua New Guinea and industry stakeholders, Charles Sturt delivered Certificates 1 to 4 in Agriculture. The training package is competency based and aligned with the Papua New Guinea National Qualifications Framework, with a focus on practical agricultural skills relevant to local production contexts. The training package was developed to provide structured, nationally recognised learning pathways for the agricultural workforce.

The completed delivery of the training package will expand access to formal agricultural qualifications in Papua New Guinea. By strengthening agricultural education and workforce capability, this initiative supports the development of more stable and productive food production systems, contributing to improved food security.
