Dr Natalie Thompson (inset) facilitates the ‘What are schools for?’ seminars.
With global education systems facing rising inequality, polarisation and increasingly standardised education policies, many educators are experiencing growing pressure and limited access to reflective, justice-oriented professional learning. In response to this need, Charles Sturt’s Faculty of Arts and Education delivered ‘What are schools for?’, a free, eight-part online seminar series designed to create accessible space for critical discussions about the purpose of education and how education systems actively marginalise some learners through policy and practice.
The series attracted 1,000 registrations, with participants exploring topics such as generative AI, anti-racist pedagogy, intersectionality, disability-affirming practice, teaching for democracy and community-based learning. By offering flexible online access, the program strengthened professional capability across regional and international communities.
The initiative supports more inclusive, equitable and community-responsive educational practice.
