Ransomware attacks continue to disrupt essential digital systems, locking data and interrupting services across industries. Through research involvement with the Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre, Charles Sturt researchers, including Dr Arash Mahboubi, developed the Ransomware-Resilient File Safe Haven (RFSH). This novel approach is designed to prevent unauthorised digital encryption. The research examined how ransomware bypasses traditional detection tools and helped refine a method that inspects data buffers and disrupts malicious encryption activity before files can be locked.
The resulting prototype demonstrated successful performance in operational environments and was tested by the NSW Department of Customer Service, confirming its functionality in real world settings. The approach showed it could halt ransomware processes by expanding encrypted data buffers, reducing their ability to complete encryption.
These outcomes demonstrate how Charles Sturt’s cyber security research is strengthening the resilience of digital infrastructure that underpins modern industries.
