Developing regional solutions for weed management

Mature ryegrass in wheat. Ryegrass is one of the focus areas for the Gulbali Weed Science team.

Charles Sturt is contributing to a national response to persistent weed challenges through its role as one of four research nodes in the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s $47 million Weed Management Initiative. The Gulbali Institute’s Weed Science team led by Professor Michael Walsh will comprise the New South Wales contingent, and apply its research capability to develop novel weed control technologies and address a broad range of region-specific weed issues. These efforts sit alongside the work of partner nodes at the University of Queensland, University of Adelaide and University of Western Australia, creating a collaborative framework that supports grower needs across Australia.

Charles Sturt’s selection as a node reflects demonstrated expertise and ensures NSW cropping research priorities are embedded within a coordinated national effort. This contributes to the protection and sustainable management of terrestrial ecosystems by developing and integrating novel approaches to weed control in grain production systems.
