Associate Professor Cate Thomas.
Associate Professor Cate Thomas is actively questioning the norms and systems that produce inequity so that genuine diversity and inclusion take root. Her research brings visibility to how gender, caring responsibilities and regionality shape academic work, offering evidence that has influenced how universities in Australia and internationally think about equity and inclusion.
In 2025 Cate’s sustained impact was recognised through the national SAGE Sector Disruptor Award, acknowledging her contributions to system, intersectional change across higher education and research. Cate provides academic and institutional leadership within the School of Social Work and Arts. She led the development of Australia’s first Graduate Certificate in Intersectionality, Diversity and Inclusion, translating research into a formal qualification that strengthens equity. She was also a key member of the university’s Athena Swan Bronze Award team, contributing analysis that informed action on recruitment, promotion, workload and organisational culture.
Her leadership with the Gender and Education Association (UK) and the Australian Women’s and Gender Studies Association extend her influence across disciplinary governance and global networks. She chaired the 20th International Gender and Education Conference and developed widely used tools, such as The Intersectionality Walk, now adopted by more than 70 organisations.
“Disruption with purpose is about creating the conditions for lasting, positive change that benefits everyone. It starts with curiosity – challenging the status quo and questioning established norms – so we can break down systemic barriers that perpetuate inequity and discrimination.”
