Associate Professor Mark Bassett.
When generative AI tools began appearing rapidly across higher education, many staff were unsure how to explore them safely while meeting ethical, privacy and governance obligations. Charles Sturt Associate Professor Mark Basset responded by developingthe S.E.C.U.R.E GenAI Use Framework through wide consultation across the university.
The framework provides a clear, practical decision-making process that helps staff assess whether proposed GenAI use is low-risk or requires additional safeguards, without needing specialist technical knowledge. By translating complex governance requirements into an accessible tool, the framework supports the safe integration of emerging AI technologies into systems and workflows.
The framework has increased staff confidence and enabled responsible, institution-wide experimentation with generative AI. It has been recognised by TEQSA, adopted by institutions across Australia and New Zealand and received national and international attention, including major awards for leadership in AI safety.
This is an example of Charles Sturt’s work supporting resilient and responsible innovation in higher education.
