LGBTQIA+ experience shared in Regional Rainbow Survey

Dr Clifford Lewis (inset), part of the team leading the Regional Rainbow Survey.

A lack of comprehensive data on the experiences of LGBTQIA+ people living in rural and regional Australia prompted Charles Sturt researchers to establish the Australian Regional Rainbow Survey. Findings show that LGBTQ+ individuals in rural and regional areas continue to report lower levels of

wellbeing than their metropolitan counterparts. Many respondents indicated they still feel compelled to conceal their sexual orientation or gender identity within their communities, and reported experiences of discrimination, including from strangers and local health services.

The survey was conducted by Associate Professor Clifford Lewis and Professor Suzanne McLaren in partnership with AIDS Council of NSW (ACON).

While the results highlight ongoing and concerning disparities, the data represents a significant advance in understanding the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people in rural and regional settings. This evidence base supports the development of targeted interventions focused on community education, reducing discrimination, and improving mental health and overall wellbeing across rural and regional Australia.
