Students involved in the 2025 engineering design challenge.
In regional Australia, growing resistance to large-scale renewable energy has increased interest in smaller, community-led energy solutions. Charles Sturt spearheaded a project in which students developed designs for a community energy network.
Civil, mechanical and electrical engineering students worked in multidisciplinary teams. The project exposed students to real regional contexts and demonstrated how collaborative engineering approaches can support locally appropriate renewable energy solutions.
Students produced concept designs for several components of a community energy scheme, including a tilting solar panel system and a wind turbine capable of supplying power to 10 local homes, with excess energy stored in a shared community battery. Additional solar systems were designed to power groundwater and irrigation pumps while contributing to the same battery storage. Together, these concepts demonstrate how community energy projects can deliver shared benefits while building regional engineering capability.
