Young Australians experiencing social isolation and unmet needs are vulnerable to extremist recruitment, posing risks to community safety and social cohesion. Charles Sturt researchers have contributed to strengthening justice responses to this challenge through policy-relevant research conducted in partnership with government.
Researchers Dr Kristy Campion and Associate Professor Emma Colvin led and contributed to multiple empirical studies examining how young people in Australia become engaged with extremist ideologies. This work ran in collaboration with the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice and aligned with federal counter-terrorism priorities to identify the diverse recruitment pathways, mental health vulnerabilities and community dynamics that can lead to youth radicalisation.
The findings have strengthened the evidence base available to legal and justice practitioners, and informed discussions on early intervention and prevention. This contribution supports efforts to reduce violence and strengthen effective, inclusive institutions by improving understanding of how extremist recruitment can be prevented.
