Schools often see play as something to fit in around learning, despite decades of research showing it as essential for children’s wellbeing. Associate Professor Brendon Hyndman is helping to change that mindset by bringing evidence to teachers, school leaders and the wider community.
Working with the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER), Brendon developed a national position statement that gives schools practical, research-backed guidance for supporting active play during recess. This work helps teachers recognise play as a meaningful part of the school day rather than an optional extra.
In 2025 he shared these ideas during a TEDx Talk in Albury, highlighting how movement, creativity and connection form the foundations of thriving school environments. Drawing on two decades of global research, he encouraged schools to rethink how their environments influence children’s health, behaviour and learning.
This work strengthens quality education by helping schools adopt evidence-informed practices that support student wellbeing and engagement.
